Statement of Intent

To create brand dedicated to magazines with a consistent alternative house style, which appealed to my target audience of style conscious 16–25-year-olds. The pre-established brand, Conde Nast, is known for their focus on high-fashion brands which are typical to their active audience which regularly buys their range of style and fashion magazines. To expand their audience, I wanted to delve into a style that Conde Nast has not explored fully. Some ideas I was inspired by were Vivienne Westwood and alternative subcultures like punk, goth and more.

In both my posters, I used a mix of serif and sans serif fonts. The red colour scheme I used on my first came directly from my model's hair and clothing. I did not use pure white or black to make sure that the magazine is accessible. With my composition, I wanted to make sure that my model’s faces were especially front and centre and to do this I made sure to put the masthead behind them to keep a house style across my products. To create flair, I found free to use assets from Pinterest to add to the texture and appeal of the front cover.
In the contents page related to the first edition cover, I wanted to include my model once more to express how they are the main feature of this edition. I made sure to include borders on each of the photographs to show a clear contrast between the background and the images. Within both my covers and my contents pages, I made sure to link my website and the magazines social media as a target audience of 16–25-year-olds are mostly technical spending a lot of time following brands on social media.

To make sure there it was age appropriate and suitable for retail distribution and compliant with regulation, I made sure to leave out any frightening imagery that is sometimes seen within alternative fashion magazines within my website and my print products. With the use of a shop, I allowed ENCODE as a brand to be diversified into other markets as well as be vertically integrated. I also made sure to link back to my magazine covers by making a section directly related to my print products.

Overall, I wanted to reflect an underrepresented group in the media and with so many young people within the media space I hope my magazine will represent those people who want to see their own personal style in a product.
